Horace Hone Portrait of a gentleman, miniature in travelling case, 1786

Set in original leather travelling case, it is a first-class miniature portrait of a possibly Irish gentleman, and is an authentic work of the well known Londoner miniaturist Horace Hone. School on October 19th 1770, with his age noted as "17 Feb 11th next", thus making his date of birth 1754, and not 1756 as previously recorded. The artist exhibited at the Royal Academy between the years 1772 and 1822, and was elected an Associate A. He travelled to Ireland in 1782 and had a successful practice in Dublin. Hone became the Miniature Painter for the Prince of Wales in 1795.
He was a good artist who painted in watercolour and enamel besides executing engravings... His usual signature is HH in monogram, three sloping lines crossed by horizontal one, this is often followed by a date...
